Alaskan Amber

   Style;
   The name of this beer style comes from the German word “alt” meaning “old”. This refers to the aging that alts undergo since they ferment more slowly and at colder temperatures than most ales. Slow fermentation helps condition the flavors in Alaskan Amber, contributing to its overall balance and smoothness.

   History;

   Alaskan Amber is based on a recipe from a turn-of-the-century brewery in the Juneau area. It was voted “Best Beer in the Nation” in the 1988 Great American Beer Festival Consumer Poll.

   Tasting notes;

   Richly malty and long on the palate, with just enough hop backing to make this beautiful amber colored “alt” style beer notably well balanced.

   Recommendations;
   Great with a variety of foods. Serve with king or silver salmon, flavorful meats and hearty Italian dishes. Perfect with pizza. A good beer for the first-time micro drinkers as well as seasoned connoisseurs.


ESB
Alaskan ESB Ale

Original Gravity: 1.054

   Style;
   Extra Special Bitter Ale. Alaskan ESB is darker and hoppier and is brewed and fermented at different temperatures than our popular Alt-style Amber. It has an exquisite copper color derived from Crystal malt and an aggressive, yet pleasant hop character.

   History;
    Originally a popular seasonal, Alaskan ESB joined our year-round product line up in 1996.

   Tasting notes;
    Malty with roasted overtones, Alaskan ESB has a crisp finish resulting from the use of premium Northwest hops.

   Recommendations;
    Complements spicy Asian and Mexican food, robust soups, stews and other winter fare. Ideal with wild game.


Alaskan Pale

Hops: Chinook, Tettnanager, Willamette

   Style;
   Golden Ale. A blonde, lighter bodied beer with a floral aroma and a crisp, hoppy finish that’s not bitter. The hop character of Alaskan Pale is due to dry hopping by hand during the fermentation process.

   History;
   Alaskan Pale became the Brewery’s second year-round product in 1988.
   Tasting notes;
   A clean, softly malted body with a hint of citrus overtones, followed by a hop-accented dry, crisp finish.
   Recommendations;
   Complements light flavors such as prawns, crab and halibut. Also a good accompaniment to spicy ethnic food. This is a particularly thirst quenching beer on a hot day.

   Style;
   Smoked Beer. Known as “rauchbier” in Germany, smoke-flavored beers were virtually unknown in the U.S. until Alaskan Smoked Porter was developed in 1988.
   History;
   Introduced in 1988, Alaskan Smoked Porter has been credited with helping inspire an American revival of smoked beers.

Alaskan Smoked Porter

Alaskan Smoked Porter is one of the most award-winning beers in the history of the Great American Beer Festival.

   Tasting notes;
   The dark, robust body and pronounced smoky flavor of this limited edition beer make it an adventuresome taste experience. Alaskan Smoked porter is produced in limited “vintages” each year and unlike most beers, may be aged in the bottle much like fine wine.
   Recommendations;
   Alaskan Smoked Porter may be enjoyed with smoked seafood, cheese and other robust foods and as an after-dinner drink. It pairs beautifully with everything from blue cheese to vanilla ice cream and raspberries. This unique beer is also a wonderful flavoring ingredient in sauces, seafood dishes and even cheesecake.

   Vertical Tastings of Vintage Smoked Porter
   A unique aspect to smoked beers that we have found at the Alaskan Brewing Company is that the smoke acts as a preservative even in beer. The smoke combined with the yeast left in the bottle allows the beers flavor and aroma to evolve over time. We have been known to hold vertical tastings with a variety of vintage years of Alaskan Smoked Porter.

   As it ages, the smoke becomes more of a subtle background note. Around the third and fourth years the beer’s other flavors such as sherry, currant, raisin, and toffee-like nuances come forward. The fifth year sees the reemergence of the smoky character to the forefront.

   Style;
   Oatmeal Stout. The origins of Oatmeal Stout go back hundreds of years when oats were added to Stouts to promote a healthier image than other beers available during that time period.

   History;
   Alaskan Stout was originally brewed as a Rough Draft for our customers in Alaska. The popularity of the Stout allowed it to become the Brewery’s fourth year-round product in the fall of 1998.
   Tasting notes;
    The unique blend of the oats and malts in Alaskan Stout produce a balanced, smooth beer with hints of coffee and caramel.
   Recommendations;
   Alaskan Stout is well matched with clams, oysters and pork tenderloin. For a special treat, pour over vanilla ice cream or serve with chocolate.


Alaskan Summer Ale

   Style;
   Based on the traditional style of Kölsch beer brewed in Cologne, Germany.

   History;
    Brewed in our original brewhouse in 1997, this beer is part of our Rough Draft series and has met success with each limited edition release. The enthusiastic reception led the Brew Crew to bring it to the Pacific Northwest as a summer seasonal.
   Tasting notes;
  Alaskan Summer Ale balances a softly malted palate with the clean freshness of Hallertauer hops. In the tradition of the style, neither overpowers the other. Both hops and malt come together to refresh and renew the palate. The straw-gold color and easy drinkability are an enjoyable way to celebrate summer.
   Recommendations;
    Enjoy this Kölsch-style beer with delicately flavored foods like fresh, wild Alaska crab or halibut or try it as an accompaniment to salads. Either way, like summer, Alaskan Summer Ale won’t last all year – so enjoy it now!


Alaskan Winter Ale

   Style;
   English Olde Ale. Traditionally malty with the warming sensation of alcohol, olde ales are brewing the fall and winter as winter warmers.

   History;
    From the seafaring adventurers of the 1700’s to the homebrewers of today, adding spruce tips to beer has a rich history in Southeast Alaska. The tender new growth of Sitka spruce tips lends a delicious, yet subtly sweet floral aroma to tea, jelly and now Alaskan Winter Ale.
   Tasting notes;
  Brewed in the style of an English Olde Ale, this ale balances the sweet heady aroma of spruce tips with the clean crisp finish of noble hops. That malty richness is complemented by the warming sensation of alcohol.
   Recommendations;
   Perfect winter warmer by the fireside or an accompaniment to holiday fare. Serve with roast goose, turkey, ham or lamb. A nice complement to holiday breads pound cake, or apple pie.
